About this Project

In 2014, the Woodbridge Apartments in Charleston, SC, underwent a critical disaster recovery project following a fire that engulfed one of the buildings. The repair of the 20 damaged units involved a comprehensive redesign and reconstruction of eight units that were completely destroyed. The additional twelve units underwent meticulous repairs. Temporary shoring designs were implemented to ensure structural stability during the reconstruction process. The assessment of damage carefully weighed the options of replacement versus repair for each affected unit. The fire originated in a kitchen and spread, ultimately reaching the roof. The recovery efforts were focused on not only rebuilding but also incorporating measures to prevent such incidents in the future. CSC was able to put together a design team including not only ourselves as structural engineers, but an outside Architect and an MEP firm to allow the Client to start with stability of the damaged structure and seamlessly move forward with full design of repairs. This undertaking showcased a commitment to restoring the community and enhancing the safety and resilience of the Woodbridge Apartments.
